Lucius Annaeus Seneca Dixit Optime

"Lucius Annaeus Seneca Dixit Optime"
"Seneca the Younger Said It Best"

You know, I am for legalizing or decriminalizing pot.

But as soon as any discussion about this goes into the the stupid "Well, pot isn't as bad as [X mundane substance*]" or "[X mundane] is worse than pot" argument, and it almost always does, I am done with the discussion. There are fewer things that piss me off more than this idiotic argument.

(*So far, I have heard tomatoes, peanuts, soda, coffee, and a bunch of other things like that. It is gotten to the point where I think users of this argument just pick whatever common substance comes to mind at the time and use it as an example.)

Seneca the Younger rebutted arguments of this kind two thousand years ago:

"Bonitas non est pessimis esse meliorem."

After all, how great is something if you are reduced to dragging acceptable things down below the thing in question in order to make that thing seem acceptable?

Does not the fact that we feel compelled to put down other things to build something up tell us that something just is not right with our argument?
