Signum, the character from Nanoha, is another instance of an anime character who has a Latin (or Latinized Greek) name that is a non-feminine word. Some other characters who have names are Lacus, Lisianthus, and Potamos.

When such words are used as names, they become epicene, that is, they may refer to either males or females, and so while the grammatical gender may be one thing, the natural gender may be another, depending on the sex of the person.

Scaevola is a feminine adjective used as a noun, meaning "little left hand," but it was used as the name of a male person, thus becoming masculine.

The Greek-derived words Abrotonum, Dorcium, Glycerium, Leontium, Phanium are all names of people even with the -um termination.

Venus, the name of the Italic goddess, was originally neuter, but since the name was attached to her for so long, it not only took the natural gender, it also gained gender-word terminations (so, e.g., accusative singular Venerem, not Venus).

But back to Signum: The name is declined just like the original word, but it is given feminine forms of modifiers such as adjectives and pronouns -- (haec) Signum, (huius) Signi, (huic) Signo, (hanc) Signum, (hac) Signo, (o) Signum.

What in the world is with the insane idea that, in the BSSM anime and manga, Usagi's Starseed is not the Ginzuisho?

I think I know the answer.

The idea seems to be predicated entirely on the misconception that an extracorporeal starseed entails the death of its owner. But the only people who die when their starseeds are extracorporeal are those whose starseeds are ripped out of their bodies via various extraction methods. Augh.

I actually read someone's response to the counterexample of Galaxia in the anime. The response that the person gave was basically "But she's Galaxia!" -- which is a tacit admission that the "extracorporeal starseed entails the death of its owner" rule is not actually fixed and can be dismissed.

In *my* fan delusion, Queen's Blade is a classic quest story starring pairs of strong women who bond together as friends and who compete for the Queen's Blade. In reality, it's an exhaustingly bad series of nothing but service, held together with a plot thinner than the g-strings they all wear.

G-strings are nice in anime, but not all the time!

However. Yumi and Sachiko awkwardly get past all this and at the end of "Vacation" are indubitably closer that ever before. This story is the last one that will ever feature a low-self-esteem Yumi. This story is *the* turning point in the entire series. This story is the beginning of Yumi becoming Rosa Chinensis. "Vacation" is a beautiful story, with some lovely romantic moments.

It needs more EEK, though!

Dubbing, by its very nature, is a process whereby the accuracy is diminished. In that sense, it is more of an adaptation than a translation. When doing a dub, or adaptation, one has to think about more than just the general meaning. The adaptation that he or she is doing ought to flow and make sense in the context of what is actually going on and how it ought to be said in English. Changing the dialogue to make the English actually make sense is not as bad as changing the dialogue for no real reason other than the fact that it can be done.

I do not hate dubs, but if I were given a choice between watching a dub and watching a sub, I would go with the sub.
